MetaTrader 5 provides a broad desktop workspace for market discovery, charting, orders, account monitoring and testing. The platform offers more built-in analytical and order capabilities than MT4, but the first task is still operational: connect to the correct environment and understand each panel before acting.
Connect to the right environment
Use the approved RockGlobal MT5 download route. During authorisation, select the exact server associated with the account. Demo and live credentials are not interchangeable. Confirm connection status, account name and server before relying on quotes or sending an instruction.
Secure the device and credentials. Do not share passwords or approve remote-access requests from unverified contacts. If access fails, verify the server, network and account status through official support.
Build the core workspace
- Market Watch: symbols, quotes and instrument access.
- Navigator: accounts, indicators, Expert Advisors, scripts and services.
- Charts: timeframes, history and analytical overlays.
- Toolbox: positions, orders, history, exposure, alerts, mailbox and logs.
Start with one watchlist and a small number of charts. Save a profile only after checking the symbol and template. Workspace organisation reduces navigation errors; it does not reduce market risk.
Find and check an instrument
Symbols can be hidden from the default Market Watch list. Use the symbol catalogue to find the correct instrument, then read its specification. Confirm trading hours, contract size, volume limits, margin settings, swap or financing treatment and order permissions. Similar names do not guarantee identical contracts.
Use charts with context
MT5 offers multiple chart types, timeframes and analytical objects. A timeframe changes how data is grouped, not the underlying market. Indicators are calculations from price or volume information and can lag, conflict or fail in changing conditions.
Check whether the chart shows bid prices and how the applicable ask or opposite side affects entry, stops and closure. Spreads, Commissions and Total Trading Cost explains why the visible chart is only part of the transaction.
Prepare and send an order
Order-ticket checks
Verify the account, symbol, volume, direction, order type, price conditions, protective levels and expiry. Market Depth may show available interest for supported instruments, but displayed depth can change or disappear and is not an execution guarantee.
After sending
Read the confirmation and Toolbox. Distinguish a filled position from an outstanding order. Check the actual fill, spread, stop and take-profit values. Review the Journal or Experts logs if the result differs from what you expected.
Monitor margin and close
Balance is not the same as equity, and used margin is not the maximum possible loss. Open profit and loss changes equity and available margin. A position remains active until it is closed or otherwise processed; hiding a symbol or closing the platform does not exit it.
A first-session checklist
- Verify the approved installer and correct server.
- Connect to a demo account.
- Arrange Market Watch, Navigator, charts and Toolbox.
- Add one instrument and read its specification.
- Open a clean chart and confirm the timeframe.
- Prepare a small demo order and review every field.
- Send, modify and close the position deliberately.
- Check History and Journal records.
- Save the workspace only after review.
If you already use MT4, do not treat MT5 as a simple software update. MT4 vs MT5 explains the separate accounts, files, code and migration work.
