MetaTrader 4 is an established desktop trading terminal. Its layout is compact, but the first session still involves several separate tasks: installing the correct application, connecting to an account, finding the right symbol, arranging a chart and understanding what an order will do.
Install and connect
Use the approved download
Start from RockGlobal’s current MT4 page or onboarding instructions. Avoid installers shared through messages or unofficial download sites. Confirm the operating system, file source and support contact before installation.
Select the correct server
An account number works only with the appropriate broker server and credentials. Demo and live environments are separate. If login fails, verify the exact server name, account type, password and network connection; repeated guessing can obscure the real cause.
Understand the workspace
- Market Watch: available symbols and current quotes.
- Navigator: accounts, indicators, Expert Advisors and scripts.
- Chart: price history, timeframe and analytical tools.
- Terminal: open trades, account history, alerts, mailbox and logs.
Panels can be shown, hidden and resized. Build a simple layout first. A crowded chart does not create better information, and an indicator is not a guaranteed signal.
Open and read a chart
Select the exact symbol from Market Watch and open a chart. Confirm the symbol, timeframe and price scale before analysis. The displayed chart can use bid prices, while an order may execute using the side of the market applicable to the trade. Spreads and fast conditions can therefore make the order result differ from the visual level.
Save templates only after checking their contents. A template can change indicators and chart settings but does not transfer an account or position.
Prepare a first order
Check the ticket
Verify symbol, volume, order type, stop-loss, take-profit and any expiry. Volume is product-specific; one lot does not represent the same exposure across every market. The platform displays available controls, but the current instrument specification and account terms govern the position.
Understand execution
A market instruction seeks execution at an available price. A pending instruction waits for its condition. Neither removes spread, slippage, gaps or rejection risk. Read Order Types and Execution Mechanics before moving beyond a demo workflow.
Monitor and close
The Trade tab shows positions, orders, balance, equity, margin and free margin. Learn the difference between an open position and a pending order. To exit, use the platform’s close function and confirm that the position disappears from the open-trade list. Closing a chart window or the application is not the same action.
A safe first-session checklist
- Confirm the approved installer and correct RG server.
- Use a demo account for orientation.
- Show Market Watch, Navigator and Terminal.
- Open one symbol and one clean chart.
- Read the instrument specification.
- Enter the smallest appropriate demo volume.
- Review stops and the order type before sending.
- Check the Trade and Journal tabs after execution.
- Close the demo position deliberately.
- Log out or secure the device when finished.
MT4 and MT5 are separate platforms. Before changing environments, read MT4 vs MT5 and plan the workspace rather than assuming it will transfer.
