Market Depth and DOM in MT5

Learn what the MT5 Depth of Market can display, how exchange and OTC views differ, and why visible levels do not guarantee an execution price.

Key takeaways

In briefKey takeaways
  • Depth of Market, or DOM, organises available bid and ask levels for one instrument.
  • The meaning of displayed prices and volumes differs between exchange-traded and over-the-counter instruments.
  • Availability, number of levels and displayed volume depend on the instrument and broker configuration.
  • Visible liquidity can change, disappear or be consumed before an order reaches the server.
  • DOM is an order-entry and context tool, not a guarantee of price, volume or execution.
On this page

MetaTrader 5 can display a Depth of Market window, often shortened to DOM, for supported instruments. It arranges buy and sell levels around the current market so a trader can inspect the available price ladder and, where enabled, place or manage instructions from the same window. The display is useful, but it must be interpreted according to the product and execution setting.

What Depth of Market shows

Bids represent buy interest and asks represent sell interest. Levels nearest the current market appear around the centre of the ladder. MetaQuotes notes that the number of displayed bids and offers is controlled by symbol parameters and that DOM availability is not guaranteed for every instrument.

The screen is a current snapshot rather than a permanent inventory. Quotes, orders and displayed quantities can update between observation, submission and processing.

Exchange and OTC views

Exchange-traded instruments

For an instrument routed in exchange mode, the DOM may show prices and order volumes supplied from the external trading system. Even then, the view can be incomplete relative to the whole market, and visible interest can be cancelled or matched before a new instruction arrives.

Over-the-counter instruments

For an OTC product, the broker can form the ladder from its quotes and volume settings. If volume is not supplied, MetaTrader can calculate price levels from Bid, Ask and the configured price step so the window operates as an order-entry tool. That is not the same as viewing a central exchange order book.

Reading the price ladder

Start with the spread between the nearest bid and ask, then inspect how prices and displayed quantity change across adjacent levels. A dense ladder can indicate more visible interest at that moment; it does not prove that the same depth will remain available for a large or delayed order.

Order size matters. An instruction larger than the quantity available at the nearest level may interact with more than one price, subject to the order type, filling policy and product rules. Review MetaTrader Order Types, Stops and Limits before using DOM controls.

Placing orders from DOM

MetaTrader supports market operations and pending-order requests from the DOM. With one-click trading enabled, a request can be sent without an additional confirmation dialog. That makes the workflow faster and increases the importance of checking symbol, direction, volume and account before clicking.

Stop Loss, Take Profit and pending-order levels may also be moved or removed from the ladder. A modification is still a request: verify the server response and the current Trade or Toolbox state.

What DOM cannot tell you

DOM cannot guarantee future liquidity, execution at a displayed level or the absence of slippage. It may not show orders resting elsewhere, internal provider liquidity, conditional instructions or interest that appears only after price changes. A sudden event can reprice several levels before an order is processed.

Use the ladder alongside the chart, product schedule, current spread and account status. Platform Connectivity and Operational Trading Risk explains why a local display and the latest server-confirmed state can differ.

A DOM checklist

  1. Confirm the correct account, server and symbol.
  2. Check whether the instrument is exchange-routed or OTC.
  3. Identify the nearest bid, ask and current spread.
  4. Compare intended volume with visible levels.
  5. Confirm order type and filling policy.
  6. Treat displayed depth as changeable, not reserved.
  7. Verify every instruction in the server-confirmed account state.

Market Depth adds context to the execution process, but it does not remove CFD leverage, liquidity or price-movement risk.

Useful answers

Frequently asked questions

Is DOM the same as an exchange order book?

Not always. Exchange-mode instruments may display exchange prices and volumes. OTC instruments can show broker-formed prices or calculated levels, so the source and meaning of the ladder differ.

Why is Market Depth unavailable for a symbol?

Availability depends on the instrument, account, broker and symbol configuration. Some products do not provide volume or a DOM view.

Does displayed volume guarantee my fill?

No. Visible interest can change, be cancelled or be consumed before an order is processed. The final result depends on the instruction, filling policy and available liquidity.

Can I trade directly from the DOM?

Yes, where supported. MetaTrader can send market and pending-order requests from the window, and one-click mode can remove the confirmation dialog.

Why did one order receive more than one price?

If the requested quantity exceeds availability at the nearest level, execution may interact with several price levels, subject to the product and filling rules.
